3CD 버젼도 있다고 알고 있는데, 어쩐지 계산대로 가져가면서도 뭔가 이상하다 생각했다. 아마 인터넷으로 구매했다면 한번 더 생각해봤을 것 같다만은. 원래 3CD 릴리스인데 라이센스되면서 한 장이 빠진 게 아니라, 원래 3CD 버젼과 2CD 버젼이 따로 있는 모양이다. 뭐 어쨌거나, 더구나 컴필이니만큼 2장보단 3장이 좋지만 라이센스로 2 for 1 가격에 이 정도의 음반을 구할 수도 있고 그런 점은 옛날보다 참 좋다. 고등학교 때; 101 라이브 앨범을 구하고 싶어서 얼마나 애탔던가 말이다.
전체적으로 인텐스한 긴장감이 유지되는 가운데 흐르는 리믹스 앨범이다. 초기 곡부터 최근 곡까지 고른 분포도 왠지 기분이 좋다. 에어가 리믹스한 Home은 거의 에어의 곡에 디페쉬모드가 피쳐링 했다해도 좋을 정도로, 살근살근한 에어 풍의 곡이다. P2P를 통해 열광적으로 유통되던 DJ Shadow의 리믹스도 CD로 가지게 돼서 좋다. 크루더&도르프마이스터는 조금 더 창조적으로 만들 수 있었을 것 같은데 아쉽고, 마지막이 Enjoy the Silence인 것은 -나 혼자만의 이야기지만- 고맙다. (그런데 해설지에서 얘기하는 Sasha & Digweed의 Enjoy the Silence는 엄밀히 말하자면 디페쉬모드의 리믹스가 아니라 Mike Koglin의 리메이크를 믹스한 것 아닌가? 아.. 아닌가. 잘 기억이 안 난다.)
부클릿의 마지막 부분에 나오는 말이 괜히 조금 감동적이다. : Here they are in pieces, still in one piece. After all the break ups, the breakdowns, the make-ups, the tragedies, the triumphs, the scares, the years, the songs, here they are, as new as ever. With the protective help of the remixes and the remixers, Depeche Mode stand, as they did back in the days of the 12 inch single, back in the vinyl age, on the edge of tomorrow. Looking forward, listening forward.
그런데 2CD 케이스 좀 뭔가 어떻게 통일되거나, 구별할 수 있는 방법이 있으면 좋겠다. 어떤 건 왼쪽에서 열리고 어떤 건 오른쪽에서 열리니, 2CD 케이스를 열 때마다 늘 고민하게 되고 조심스럽다. 나는 옛날식의 3장 두께에 가까운 두툼한 2CD 케이스도 좋은데.
